A Moving Checklist: From Packing to Settling In

March, 2025

Moving house can feel like a marathon, not a sprint. To avoid feeling overwhelmed, breaking the process down into manageable steps is key.

This checklist will guide you from the initial packing stages right through to settling into your new home.

8 Weeks Before Moving:

Declutter and Downsize:  This is the perfect time to get rid of unwanted items. Sell, donate, or recycle anything you don't need.

Research Removal Companies: Get quotes from several reputable removal companies and book your preferred option.

Inform Important Contacts: Notify your bank, insurance providers, utility companies, and any subscription services of your upcoming move.

Start Packing Non-Essentials: Begin packing items you won't need in the weeks leading up to the move, such as out-of-season clothing, books, and decorations.

Gather Packing Supplies: Stock up on sturdy boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and markers.

4 Weeks Before Moving:

Confirm Removal Arrangements: Double-check your booking with the removal company.

Arrange for Utility Transfers: Contact your gas, electricity, water, and internet providers to schedule disconnections and reconnections.

Pack Room by Room: Focus on packing one room at a time, labelling boxes clearly with their contents and destination room.

Create an Inventory List: Keep a list of everything you've packed to ensure nothing gets lost during the move.

Arrange Childcare or Pet Care: If necessary, make arrangements for childcare or pet care on moving day.

 1 Week Before Moving:

Pack Essential Items: Prepare a box or suitcase with essential items you'll need on moving day, such as toiletries, medications, and a change of clothes.

Defrost Your Refrigerator: Empty and defrost your refrigerator and freezer.

Dispose of Perishables: Don't pack any perishable food items.

Confirm Final Details: Reconfirm all moving arrangements with the removal company and utility providers.

Pack a "First Night" Box: Include items you'll need for your first night in your new home, such as bedding, towels, and basic kitchen supplies.

Moving Day:

Supervise the Removal Team: Be on hand to direct the removal team and answer any questions.

Do a Final Walk-Through: Before leaving your old home, do a final walk-through to ensure nothing has been left behind.

Collect Keys to Your New Home: Ensure you have all the keys to your new property.

Check Utilities: Verify that all utilities are working in your new home.

Settling In:

Unpack Essentials: Unpack your "first night" box and set up your beds.

Start Unpacking Room by Room: Begin unpacking boxes, prioritizing essential items and high-traffic areas.

Set Up Utilities: Ensure your utilities are connected.

Change Your Address: Update your address with relevant organizations and services.

Explore Your New Neighbourhood: Take some time to explore your new neighbourhood and discover local amenities.

Relax and Enjoy Your New Home!

Moving can be stressful, but with careful planning and organisation, you can make the transition as smooth as possible.

Good luck with your move!
